MUSIC THERAPY

"Music can lift us out of depression or move us to tears... But for many, music is even more – it can provide access, even when no medication can, to movement, to speech, to life. For them, music is not a luxury, but a necessity."
~ Oliver Sacks

What is Music Therapy?
Music therapy is an HPCSA-registered health profession in South Africa that involves the use of music interventions and other creative arts to address physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs.
In South Africa, it is facilitated by trained music therapists who have completed the Masters programme at the University of Pretoria. It can involve processes such as music listening, creating music, art, movement and verbal processing. It is effective across a wide range of populations, including babies, children, adults, and older adults, and can be implemented in various settings such as hospitals, schools, rehabilitation centres, and mental health facilities.
For many people, verbal expression is challenging, whether due to disability, autism or mental health challenges. The creative arts provide an alternative avenue for self-expression, often bypassing speech and cognitive barriers
One does not need any musical experience to benefit from Music Therapy
